I am a book designer with a Bachelor of Science degree in commercial art and more than 25 years of experience in book publishing. My career as a book designer began at Holt, Rinehart and Winston, Inc., book publishers. There I received excellent training in the profession of book design and also in the skills of book production and project management. In the years that followed I moved on to management positions as both senior book design supervisor and art director with other well
known book publishers: Simon & Schuster, Inc., John Wiley & Sons, Inc., McGraw-Hill, Inc., and Random House, Inc. I founded Judy Allan Book Design in the 1990s. I work on a Macintosh, am an expert in Quark XPress and Photoshop, and proficient in Adobe Illustrator, Acrobat and several other applications critical to book production. The majority of my work involves designing books for textbook, medical, and professional reference publishers but, I also provide book layout and cover design for a few trade book publishers. Most of my clients are well recognized book publishing companies. See partial list of books in print below.
This is my online portfolio where you can conveniently view samples of my
2-color and 4-color book cover design. My trade book cover designs incorporate
the use of my own paintings, illustrations, and photographs. The 1-, 2- and 4-color interior book design samples are in PDF format. They contain complete or partial design layouts.
